Fes to Volubilis and Meknes

Fez is a former capital of Morocco that is now the country’s third-largest city. It is an ancient city that still retains two old medinas. The old capital Meknes has impressive monuments, built by a Muslims’ powerful ruler, Moulay Ismail. Travelers may want to begin their visit by walking through the Fes el Bali Medina.

During this trip, you will visit Volubilis which are the ruins of an old Roman town. You will also visit the town of Moulay Idriss. During this trip, you will also walk the streets of Mekness which is a historical city and one of the four imperial cities of Morocco.

Volubilis: Volubilis is an ancient Roman city and the remains of this city are very well preserved. It is one of the most visited site in Morocco, and it is another designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and it received this status in 1997. Volubilis is spread on an area of 40 hectares and is just 33 kilometers north of Merkes. One of the best ways to experience these ruins is walk through the ruins, although there is some places that you still need to see like the baths, beautiful mosaics, the Arch of Caracalla, temple of Jupiter and the Basilica.

Moulay Idriss: Moulay Idriss is one of the most visited sites in Morocco, it is mainly a pilgrimage site and that is why so many people come here. This site is named in the honor of Idriss I who was the grandson of Muhammad the founder of the dynasty Idisid. Due to its religious status, the city was previously closed off to non-muslims, however now only the Mausoleum is off limits.

Meknes: Meknes is very different from the rest of the Imperial Cities of Morocco. It is much quieter and relaxed. It is surrounded by fields and this is why the city’s economy depends on agricultural products. However, this region also produces the largest amount of wine from Morocco. This fact is surprising because Muslims are forbidden from drinking alcohol. In Meknes you can visit the souks, Plaza el-Hedim, the Dar Jamai Museum, the Madrasa Bou Inania and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail.
